Using the AWARE Form as a Tool for Development

Using the AWARE form is essential in fostering behavioral change in associates. In this lesson, you will learn why the AWARE form is an essential tool in your work as well as when and how it should be used. You will also recognize how it leads to associates’ success. Practicing what you learn today will help you use the AWARE form in an effective way and better fulfill your work responsibilities.


The AWARE Form as an Essential Tool

From the following list, choose and complete one or more activities that best apply to your situation.

Activity 1

Read the following quote:

“Helping associates [and candidates] improve needed work behavior is of crucial importance and the main focus of our work at Deseret Industries“ (Deseret Industries Operations Guide, section 2, page 24).

As a group, discuss the following:

  • Why is it important to have a clear focus for what we do?
  • What is the main focus of our work at Deseret Industries?
  • What role does the AWARE form play in helping us achieve the main focus of our work? How does it do this?
  • How can you become familiar with the AWARE form?

Activity 2

As a group, discuss the following:

  • How often do you use the AWARE form in your work?
  • How has the AWARE form helped you:
    • Identify areas in which associates should improve?
    • Talk to associates about behavior changes?
    • Commend associates for good behavior or improvement in a particular behavior?
  • How valuable is the AWARE form in your daily work?
  • How could you make the AWARE form an essential tool in your work?

Activity 3

Divide into small groups to discuss the following questions about using the AWARE form in work adjustment:

  • How have you used the AWARE form with associates?
  • What challenges do you face when using the AWARE form?
  • What methods have you found most effective as you use the AWARE form?
  • How have you helped individuals understand the AWARE form behaviors?
  • How do you use the AWARE form with lead associates?
  • How have you used the AWARE form to help associates develop power statements?
  • Reflecting on the ways and frequency with which you use this form, how valuable is it to your current job?

After discussing these questions with your group, share what you learned with the rest of the class.

How and When the AWARE Form Should Be Used

From the following list, choose and complete one or more activities that best apply to your situation.

Activity 1

Read Deseret Industries Operations Guide, section 2, pages 23–24.

Divide into small groups and discuss the following questions:

  • How and when should the AWARE form be used in training?
  • What techniques can be used to help associates become more work-adjusted?
  • What three things must staff be skilled in to provide work-adjustment service?

Activity 2

Individually (or in pairs) take about five minutes to become familiar with the AWARE form.

Then, as a group, discuss:

  • Why is it important to observe and correctly quantify each of the 29 behaviors?
  • Why is this responsibility essential to your effectiveness as a job coach trainer?
  • What methods have you found to be most effective in evaluating behavior during work?

Individually, answer the following question in your learner's journal:

  • What will I do to become more effective at observing and recording AWARE behaviors during work?

Activity 3

Walk around the room, taking time to study the information from the “AWARE Resource and Training Guide” (Deseret Industries Operations Guide, section 2, pages 36–44) that the facilitator has posted in different stations. Feel free to record brief notes about the information. After everyone has had a chance to visit each station, regroup and discuss the following questions:

  • When, or in what type of situations, should you use the AWARE form?
  • In those situations, what are some ways in which you can effectively use the AWARE form?

How the AWARE Form Leads to Success

From the following list, choose and complete one or more activities that best apply to your situation.

Activity 1

Choose one of your associates’ development plans. Without identifying the associate, discuss the following questions with the group:

  • Does the associate’s plan have goals related to becoming work-adjusted?
  • Is the associate using the AWARE form to set goals?
  • How successfully are associates using DECM’s associate portal to record AWARE scores? Share ideas on how best to train associates in how to use the associate portal.
  • How can you more effectively coach the associate to set goals to improve his or her work-adjustment?

Ask for feedback on how to effectively coach the associate to set goals, particularly regarding the AWARE form.

Activity 2

Share with the group a success story you have experienced or seen at Deseret Industries. Then, as a group, discuss the following questions:

  • What behaviors from the AWARE form did the associate work on?
  • What was the changing process like for the associate?
  • What was the associate’s changing process like for the job coach trainer?
  • How did the job coach trainer use the AWARE form to foster this change?
  • What other methods, tools, or support did the job coach trainer apply to facilitate and support the associate’s change?
  • How long did this process last?

Ponder and Plan

“What Lack I Yet?”

Seek to identify a personal or business gap or need.

Spend a few minutes silently pondering what you've discussed during this lesson. Listen as the Holy Ghost helps you identify areas where you can improve. Record your impressions in your learner's journal under the question “What Lack I Yet?”

“What Must I Do?”

Seek ways to close the gap or develop the required talent(s) to meet the need.

With the guidance of the Spirit, create your plan of how you will improve and close the gap(s) you have identified. You may use one or more of the exercises below, your own strategy, or a combination of both. Record this plan in your learner's journal under “What Must I Do?”

  • Record and act upon any impression you have regarding your use of the AWARE form.
  • Prayerfully study the AWARE form and the supporting guides for each work behavior.
  • Work with an associate using the AWARE form. Invite another job coach trainer to observe and provide feedback. Afterward, discuss with the associate and the other job coach trainer what you learned from the experience.
  • Help an associate more effectively use the associate portal in DECM.

After a few minutes, those who are comfortable doing so can share their impressions with the group.

“Therefore, What?”

Seek understanding, and then share what you learned.

During the week, focus on implementing the plan you created. Record your impressions or lessons learned in your learner's journal under “Therefore, What?” You will be given time at the beginning of next week's lesson to share your experience with the group.
