In this lesson, you will learn how to: (1) recognize the value of the Life Skills Library; and (2) navigate, locate, and explain how the Life Skills Library is organized. The more familiar you are with the library and its resources, the quicker and better you will be able to assist associates.

Recognizing the Value of the Life Skills Library

From the following list, choose and complete one or more activities that best apply to your situation.

Activity 1

Watch the video “Chapter 31: Captain Moroni Defeats Zerahemnah” (Book of Mormon Stories on the LDS Media Library) about how Captain Moroni prepared his troops prior to a battle with the Lamanites (see Alma 43:19, 23–33). Pay attention to all of the different resources Moroni utilized.

Following the video, divide into pairs or small groups. Then list the many resources utilized by Captain Moroni.

As a group, discuss the following questions:

  • How did each resource contribute to Captain Moroni’s success?
  • Which resources had the most significant impact? Which resources weren’t as crucial?
  • How might the outcome have changed if Moroni had neglected using certain resources?
  • How do you prepare to help associates in ways that are similar to Moroni’s preparation?
  • How can regularly consulting the Life Skills Library help you to assist your associates?

As a group, watch and discuss the Super Steve video (on the Deseret Employment site):

  • What is the video about?
  • How did Steve find guides and answers to help Bobby?
  • What role did the Life Skills Library play in the story?
  • In your opinion, how can the Life Skills Library help you work with associates?

Activity 3

Divide a page in your learner’s journal into two columns. In the left column, list any issues your associates have struggled to resolve effectively.

Check to see if any of the issues you listed in your learner’s journal are covered by the Life Skills Library topics. In the right column, write any applicable life skills topics that could help resolve the issues in the left column. Share your findings with the rest of the attendees.

  • Are you surprised not to find particular topics in the modules? Explain.

Open a few modules and browse through them. Discuss as a group:

  • What type of information do modules contain?

Read through one of the modules individually, and then discuss the following:

  • What insights did you get from reading the module?

Activity 3

Though the Life Skills Library has great resources, it currently holds only 26 modules for job coach trainers.

As a group, discuss the following:

  • Other than browsing through modules, what else can job coach trainers do in the Life Skills Library?
  • How can job coach trainers increase the capacity and efficiency of this library as a resource for their work and for future job coach trainers? Review how you can request that additional modules be added to the Life Skills Library.

Ponder and Plan

“What Lack I Yet?”

Seek to identify a personal or business gap or need.

Spend a few minutes silently pondering what you've discussed during this lesson. Listen as the Holy Ghost helps you identify areas where you can improve. Record your impressions in your learner's journal under the question “What Lack I Yet?”

“What Must I Do?”

Seek ways to close the gap or develop the required talent(s) to meet the need.

With the guidance of the Spirit, create your plan of how you will improve and close the gap(s) you have identified. You may use one or more of the exercises below, your own strategy, or a combination of both. Record this plan in your learner's journal under “What Must I Do?”

  • Use the Life Skills Library at least once this coming week to help an associate.
  • Think of one or two additional modules for the Life Skills Library that are not currently available. Submit these ideas online.

After a few minutes, those who are comfortable doing so can share their impressions with the group.

“Therefore, What?”

Seek understanding, and then share what you learned.

During the week, focus on implementing the plan you created. Record your impressions or lessons learned in your learner's journal under “Therefore, What?” You will be given time at the beginning of next week's lesson to share your experience with the group.

“In regards to these [life skills] modules, we wish to emphasize that development counselors assisted in their development in order to share with the rest of Deseret Employment staff (and mentors) their vast collection of resources.”
